State Convention April 15-16

The Duncan AAUW branch is proud to host the 2016 AAUW/OK State Convention and our members promise you a good time. The convention itself will offer much for it’s attendees, but there are also lots of things for families to do, should you choose to bring spouses or kids. There is lots of good shopping available in downtown Duncan, including many antique shops and unusual boutique type shops. Duncan is located very close to the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge (about one hour and fifteen minutes away). Also worth a visit is the Stephens County Historical Museum in Fuqua Park . Also located there is a Railroad Museum, which is a real delight if you like trains. You can even climb aboard the 905 Steam Engine (completely restored.)

There will be a live concert on Friday evening at the Simmons Center, featuring a dance/vocal group from Columbia, (South America), called Cimarron. Tickets for that event will be $15, which is a discounted rate. On Saturday, anyone who loves old cars will want to attend the Chisholm Trail Classic Car Show, which stretches out along five blocks of Main Street. The show is well known among classic car people and there will be some wonderful cars on display. The show is free and will run most of the day. (Sorry convention goers, you won’t have much time for this!)

On Saturday evening, we will gather at the Chisholm Trail Heritage Center for a tour, world-class art, and dinner. This museum is now affiliated with the Smithsonian Institution and is a remarkable place. Everyone is always surprised it is in Duncan, but we are fortunate enough to have a private benefactor whose passion is the Chisholm Trail. The Center welcomes all ages…there is plenty for kids to do. The theaters are great fun. For the adults, there is a collection of western art which is amazing.

Hope to see you there!
